Mats Sundin is the new Scott Niedermayer

Published by boarderb at 5:11 pm under NHL, toronto maple leafs Edit This

Following in the footsteps of Scott Niedermayer, Mats Sundin is the new drama queen for the “Am I going to play next year or not?” saga. This is ridiculous. Obviously, some teams have expressed (an over-the-top!) interest in signing Sundin. However, Sundin has yet to decide if he’s going to continue playing.

Not having been a hockey player myself, maybe I’m missing something. But I don’t understand how this is such a difficult decision. If you’re not hampered by a serious or nagging injury, and you haven’t been out of the sport for years and are debating a big comeback … how hard is it to decide to play again?

I’ll predict that he’ll hem and haw and pull a Scott Niedermayer / Peter Forsberg and come back near the trade deadline. There’ll be a lot of fanfare and Sundin will ultimately not contribute significantly to his team of choice. He will whimper out like Brett Hull, having had the game pass him by.

Maybe I’m being too harsh, but I hate this stuff, keeping the team and the fans waiting, and all for what? The attention? The money? To try to appear to be the single difference-making, impact player?

Sign in the next 10 days or retire and spare us from hearing about it. Thank you.

i know how much you like him, so i felt a little bad posting it, but … i saw the article on tsn, and it just seems like such a ploy. and forsberg and niedermayer make me so mad, pulling that every year.

but you’re right - he could always return and retire midway through if he just can’t do it. at least he tried and made a decision and didn’t hold everyone hostage waiting while he ‘thought about it’
