Unrestricted Free Agents
As the first month of free agency of 2008 winds down, let’s take a look at some of the unrestricted free agents that are still available, and whether or not they’re worth picking up.
Glen Murray: Aside from being a little pricey and getting older, I think Murray has at least another year left in him. He’s only been on the market a few days, but I’m surprised he hasn’t gotten a few offers already.
Mark Parrish: He was just bought out by the Wild, after a couple of not too terrible seasons. He’s basically a 40-point guy, but pretty consistent, but definitely not worth $3 million. Give the guy $1.5-2, and I’d take him.
Teppo Numminen: The Buffalo Sabres are notorious for dragging their feet on any kind of transaction. There are rumors that they’re looking to resign defenseman Numminen, who was limited to one game last season due to a heart condition. Even at age 40, Teppo would be able to make a notable contribution to the Sabres, who tend to have trouble finding leadership. As long as he’s not looking for another $3.5 million contract, he should definitely get an offer.
John Sebastien Aubin: After a disappointing year with the Los Angeles Kings, I think JS is going to have a tough time finding a job in the NHL this year.
Jocelyn Thibault: Another goalie with a disappointing year, Thibault has a lot more fuel in the tank than he was allowed to use as a Sabre. For less than a million dollars, he could definitely be a role-player on a struggling team.
Steve Rucchin: When even Atlanta doesn’t resign you, you may have to rethink your time in the NHL. Sorry, Steve.
Stephane Yelle: Was a contributing factor during Colorado’s playoff runs a couple years ago, but as an individual, he may not add much to a team. His price tag may decide his fate.
Bret Hedican: It seems he was injured practically every other game last year (he was on my fantasy hockey team), but he’s still a decent player. Did he talk about retiring and moving to LA? If not, he’d be a worthy pickup for a team looking for some solid, veteran defense.
Kevyn Adams: There were all these rumors last year (or was it the year before?) that the Sabres were going to get him, and I just knew it would be a mistake. He’s an overpriced, under producing, mediocre player at best.
Jeff Jillson: Poor Jillson has been a disappointment on team after team in the NHL, spending the bulk of his time in the AHL each year. I don’t see another team signing him.
Patrice Brisebois: His production has certainly trailed off in the past couple seasons, but as a 6th or 7th D man, I’d take a chance on him.
